Learn To Wire Ethernet Cables Yourself

It is quite simple to learn how to wire Ethernet cables yourself.

The following is a step-by-step instruction guide on how to go about doing the same:-

  1. Holding the cable properly, cut off about two inches of the outer jacket. You must take care that no part of the internal twisted pair wiring is nicked. If there is any such damage, you must clip off this portion entirely, and strip off two more inches of the jacket.
  2. You will find eight wires inside. They will be white/orange, orange, white/green, green, white/brown, brown and white/blue, blue. The complementary wire pairs will be twisted around each other, like white/orange will be twisted around orange. Thus, there will be four twisted pairs of wires inside the jacket. You now have to untwist there wises and separate them. However, your twisting must not go lower than the line where you have opened the jacket, or it will lead to problems with your connections. If it does go lower due to a mistake, then you will have to cut off this portion and start afresh, from unsheathing the jacket.
  3. When this part of the job is done, you have to align the wires in the right manner. The correct way to do this is to lay the wires on the palm of your hand and straighten them out so that they all lie in the same plane. You have to arrange them in the right color combination. There are two kinds of Ethernet cables, and so there are different color combinations. Read the note on color combinations below to understand how you should align the wires.
  4. The next step is to trim the wires to a uniform length. The right way to go about this is to hold all the wires in their rightfully aligned position, keep about half to three-fourths of an inch of their length from the base of the jacket and then trim them with a sharp wire cutter.
  5. Now the wires are ready to be inserted in the RJ45 plug. You have to adjust the arranged wires into the RJ45 plug in the correct order, and insert it so that the about one-fourth of an inch of the jacket enters into the plug.
  6. With this position held in place, use a crimping tool and crimp the end of the RJ45 pin. After the crimping, you must once again ensure that the wires are arranged in the correct order and that the copper parts of the wires are making proper contact with the metallic contact parts of the RJ45 pin.
  7. After that, you must unravel the cable and, after measuring out the length you will need, cut the cable at the other end. Perform the same operations on the other end too, and make sure you have kept the color combinations in the right order.

Finally, you must use a cable tester and check if your Ethernet cables have been connected in the right manner and if they are working efficiently.
